Last year at Dragoncon I had all of thirty or so minutes total to escape my booth in the Artist Bazaar to explore the Comic side of the gallery. I did so with one specific purpose: to find and purchase a piece by a friend whose art I've been growing increasingly obsessed with for years now- Drew Green. His work is whimsical, streamlined and comes off effortlessly fluid. He brings a playfulness and joy to his pieces that I would kill to be able to bring into my own, and his colors are always perfect. Even more impressive to me, however, is his ability to translate likenesses into his signature style- something I've always had a mental block with.

I knew what I wanted before I even got there: a commissioned Drew Green piece of my very own. I didn't care how long it would take, but I not only wanted the sketch that he was offering at the convention itself, but a piece with background and color (something that, due to his incredibly busy schedule, would take much, much longer to complete). This way not only would I own a true original (the line work he does by hand) but also the completed digital product. Luckily he was game for it, and I gave him the topic: not just of me, but me in my Slutty Finn cosplay. Something so ridiculous felt like a perfect match for his animated style. And now, finally, I have the final product. BEHOLD!

The result is even greater than I was hoping for. Thank you, Drew, for such a wonderful piece for me to cherish forever.

MoCCA Fest fast approaches! This year, thanks to the wonderful generosity of Marc Scheff I was able to procure a booth, so I will be selling my Nüdtendo trading cards, prints and more!

I also managed to nab a fantastic booth-mate in the form of Alisa Stern (creator of Doctor Puppet and other various amazing animations, illustrations, and jewelry. So I'm hoping this year will be the best one yet!

And just for those who do not know this yet: the venue has changed this year. MoCCA Fest is no longer in the Armory at Lexington Aenue and 25th Street. The new digs are located in West Chelsea- with the convention split between two buildings: the panels will be taking place at the High Line Hotel and the Artist Alley Booth Section is at Center548- which is where I will be holed up (on the 4th floor at Booth 415). Here's a small map of the situation:

So come by! I'll be making more posts detailing the event as it is happening and post-con with what goodies I'm able to nab. I hope to see you all there!

Here's my announcement, by the way:

It has been quite a while since I last posted. Well over a months, bordering on two. During this time I've been perm-lancing at a really fun company while also trying to do as much artwork as I can on the side (which is sadly not as much as I'd like, but for the time being it's well worth it). Without further ado: NEWS!

First of all everyone should immediately go watch the following video: http://www.nytimes.com/video/nyregion/100000003272195/scavenging-for-art.html

It is a great video about Free Art Friday done by Ashley Maas who currently works at the New York Times. It's partially so great because it does a lovely job showing my work (and unlike the Wallstreet Journal article about FAF -that also displayed my work- gave me proper credit). So check it out!!! I'm super excited about it.

As for the rundown on the past two FAFs- I've come to some realizations:

1. FAF is a daylight event. I notice people still participate after it grows dark, but for the most part if I put a work up after dark it never gets found. This means that things need to be placed earlier and faster in the winter months because it gets dark so early.

2. I need to limit the amount of work I hide to two or three pieces each month. November was by far the most fun I've had with FAF to date, but it was also extremely stressful because I ended up putting up around 12 pieces. So in the future it will be limited to three, four pieces max. Especially in the winter months where there are less people running about looking for art.

3. I may need to start getting creative in my hiding practices. I tried something with December that I may just want to keep doing: my first piece was hidden behind the counter at one of my favorite local coffee shops (the first place I displayed my Nüdtendo series in the neighborhood) Express Yourself Barista Bar. In order to get it you had to give the barista a password (this time it was Squidmaleon). However, because this was above and beyond what is normally asked of participants I decided to sweeten the deal (literally) by pre-purchasing five dollars worth of coffee/pastries for the person who managed to get there and nab the art. I don't know- something about it made me even happier after it was found. It became a video game mission with rewards! And while I don't plan on doing that for every piece I think I'm going to start doing it for any originals I hide in the future.

Anyways, I'm going to post some pictures of the last two FAFs really soon, but for now this update should suffice. AND GO WATCH THAT VIDEO!
